About us

Vectorization Studio was founded in 1994 in Observatory, Cape Town, and works on one thing: turning artwork into usable vector files for print, digital and signage. We help South African businesses transform rough files, ageing logos and sketches into crisp vector artwork that performs properly in the real world.

A Cape Town studio built around careful redraws

We work from Observatory and serve clients in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and surrounding areas like Stellenbosch, Paarl and Port Elizabeth. Most projects start with a logo that is hard to use, a low-resolution image, or an artwork file that no longer suits the way a business needs to print, cut or scale it. Our job is to bring that work into a format that can be used properly across signage, packaging, stationery and digital channels.

Some jobs need a straight logo redraw, where the aim is to recreate existing artwork as clean vector paths. Others call for a more hands-on illustration approach, where the artwork needs detail, line control and a bit more personality. We handle both with the same practical mindset, and we keep the file structure clear so the final artwork is easy to work with later.

How we handle bitmap tracing and hand redraws

Not every file should be treated the same way. A bitmap trace can be a useful starting point when the source image is simple and the shapes are already clean, but it can also carry over rough edges, blur and uneven curves. A hand redraw is different. It means rebuilding the artwork properly, adjusting proportions, checking line weight and making sure the final result behaves well at any size.

For logos, we usually recommend the method that best suits the source material and the end use. A badge for embroidery, a label for packaging or a sign for a shopfront may each need a slightly different approach. The goal is always the same: clean vector artwork that prints well and scales without trouble.

  • Bitmap tracing can suit basic shapes with simple edges
  • Hand redraws are better for clarity, symmetry and fine control
  • Illustration work allows more detail for icons, mascots and scenes
  • Final artwork can be supplied in SVG, EPS, PDF or AI formats

Artwork files that are ready for print, cut and edit

Vector files are useful because they stay sharp at any size, whether the artwork is used on a business card or a large board outside a shop in Durban or Pretoria. We prepare files for practical use, not just for looking good on screen. That means tidy layers where needed, sensible colour use and formats that can move between printers, sign writers and internal teams without confusion.

We can supply SVG, EPS, PDF and AI files depending on what the job needs. If a client needs artwork for a printer, a cutter, a website or a packaging supplier, we make sure the file choice suits the next step. Coastal humidity, municipal sign rules and busy production schedules can all affect how artwork is used, so clear files matter more than people think.

The people behind the work

Vectorization Studio is led by Luyanda Mthembu, with a team that covers vector drawing, illustration, client coordination, prepress and quality control. Each person has a clear role, which helps keep projects moving and reduces back and forth when a file needs adjustment. It also means there is proper checking before artwork is released.

  • Luyanda Mthembu, Managing Director
  • Ayesha Mafokeng, Senior Vector Artist
  • Pieter Skosana, Illustration Lead
  • Zanele Kajee, Client Services Manager
  • Teboho Molefe, Prepress Coordinator
  • Megan Khoza, Quality Control Artist

That mix of skills helps us handle a wide range of briefs, from simple brand icons to more detailed mascot work, menu illustrations, map illustrations and pattern sets. We keep the process direct and practical, with clear feedback at each stage.

What we value in every project

We like work that is neat, useful and easy to hand over. A good file should not need guesswork. It should be built with care, named properly and prepared for the people who will use it next. That matters whether the artwork is going to a printer in Cape Town, a sign shop in Johannesburg or a packaging team elsewhere in South Africa.

We also value honesty around rights and source material. Clients must own the artwork they send or have permission to use it. If a file is supplied from another designer, supplier or previous project, we will only proceed where the client has the right to use that material. It protects everyone involved and keeps the work clean from the start.

  • We work on artwork the client owns or has rights to use
  • We keep communication plain and direct
  • We focus on fit for purpose, not unnecessary decoration
  • We check details carefully before delivery

How clients usually find us

Many clients reach us through the enquiry form on our contact page when they need a logo redrawn, a mascot illustrated or a set of icons built for packaging or social graphics. Some need one small file fixed, while others need a full suite of artwork for a product line, menu, badge set or event campaign. We deal with each request on its own merits, because a fast job in Bloemfontein may need a different file setup from a packaging project in Stellenbosch.

Vectorization Studio has been based in Observatory, Cape Town, and works on logo redraw projects for businesses across South Africa. Whether the brief is for a start-up in Durban or a long-established company in Pretoria, we deliver artwork that is crisp, practical and ready for the next stage. No fuss, just solid vector work that stands up once it leaves our studio.

Redraw and file questions

Do you redraw logos from low-quality images?

Yes. We often work from old JPEGs, screenshots and other low-resolution files, then rebuild the artwork as clean vector paths so it can be used for print, signage and digital work.

What file formats can you supply?

We can supply SVG, EPS, PDF and AI files, depending on what the project needs and how the artwork will be used by your printer, designer or production team.

Can you work with artwork I received from someone else?

Yes, as long as you own the artwork or have permission to use it. We do not proceed with files that the client does not have the right to use.

Have a blurry logo? Send it to the studio.
