Repeating patterns made for print, fabric and display
Pattern illustration is more than placing a motif on a page and repeating it. The repeat has to sit neatly, hold its shape at different sizes, and still look balanced when a printer stretches it across a carton, wrap, wallpaper panel or textile run. We draw patterns by hand in vector format so the artwork can scale without losing edge quality, which suits packaging in Cape Town, retail signage in Johannesburg, soft goods in Durban and branded backdrops for events in Pretoria or Bloemfontein.
Each pattern starts with your brief, your artwork rights confirmed, and a clear idea of where the design will be used. Some clients need a fine tonal repeat for cosmetic boxes, others want bold icons for fabric or a strong background for menus and presentation boards. We adapt the density, spacing and visual rhythm to suit the surface, the viewing distance and the print method. If the artwork must work in coastal humidity or under bright shop lighting, we keep the lines clean and the details practical.
- Smooth repeat patterns for packaging, textiles and promotional materials
- Single-tile repeats, half-drop repeats and mirrored layouts where suitable
- Vector build for easy resizing across small labels and large backdrops
- Artwork supplied as SVG, EPS, PDF or AI depending on your workflow
How we build your pattern artwork
We begin with the source material, whether that is a sketch, existing logo element, product reference or a rough visual direction. If you want the pattern to include a logo icon, mascot element, line drawing or custom symbol, we redraw those parts first and then build the repeat around them. Bitmap tracing can be useful for a quick conversion of a flat image, but it is not always the best method when the original file is low resolution, uneven or full of noise. In those cases, a hand redraw gives cleaner lines and better control over joins, corners and fills.
For more detailed patterns, we separate the work into layers so colour changes and revisions can be managed without rebuilding the whole design. That helps when a label needs one version for black print and another for a full colour wrap. It also helps when your printer requests a simplified file for spot colour, die lines or overprint setup. We keep the structure tidy so your team can use the artwork later without confusion.
- Source review and rights check before any redraw begins
- Pattern tile planning to avoid visible joins or awkward breaks
- Vector linework, fills and colour layers prepared for print production
- Optional black and white, one-colour or full colour versions
What is included in a pattern illustration job
A typical pattern illustration commission includes one primary repeat tile, production-ready export files and the agreed set of colour versions. We can also prepare pattern elements for related uses such as social graphics, sticker sheets, menu covers or presentation panels if the same visual system is needed across your brand. Where the artwork needs to sit beside existing packaging text or a label grid, we allow space for that from the start so the repeat does not fight with the copy.
We work with businesses in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Port Elizabeth as well as the bigger metros, and the delivery files are set up for local and export print workflows. The final handover can include flattened PDFs for sign-off, editable vector formats for your designer or printer, and web-friendly exports where needed. If your supplier asks for specific bleed, trim or safe area settings, we can build to that spec rather than leaving it to guesswork.
- One or more repeat options depending on the brief
- Colourways for packaging, textile or display use
- Print-ready export with bleed and safe area where required
- Editable vector files for future scale or colour changes
Turnaround, pricing and revision approach
Turnaround depends on the complexity of the repeat, the amount of hand drawing required and how many surfaces the pattern must suit. A simple icon-based repeat is usually quicker than a detailed botanical or scenic pattern with many small joins. We quote after reviewing the brief and any source artwork, because pricing changes with the level of redraw, number of layouts, file preparation and revision rounds. There is no one-size-fits-all fee for pattern work, and we would rather give a proper scope than load you with extras later.
Where a client needs the pattern across several pack sizes, we often plan the artwork so one master repeat can be adapted rather than redrawn from scratch each time. That keeps the cost sensible and makes future updates easier. If a municipal or retailer spec changes later, the artwork can be adjusted without redoing the whole system, which saves time when the print window is tight and the supplier is waiting on final files.
- Quoted per brief after reviewing usage, complexity and file requirements
- Revision rounds included according to the approved scope
- Multi-use pattern systems can be planned to reduce repeat work
- Final pricing reflects redraw time, illustration detail and export setup
File specs and production setup
Pattern files must travel cleanly from studio to printer, cutter or brand team. We prepare artwork in vector form so the repeat holds at small and large sizes, and we check line weight, colour separation and tile alignment before release. If the pattern is for packaging, we can keep the repeat clear of barcodes, regulatory panels and nutrition blocks. If it is for textile or wallpaper, we can allow for fabric direction, seam placement and the repeat size your manufacturer prefers.
We also keep maintenance in mind. When a seasonal range changes or a colour update is needed, the pattern can be revisited at set intervals rather than rebuilt from zero. For brands with recurring campaigns, we recommend a review before each new production cycle, especially when new substrates, coatings or finishes are introduced. Coastal humidity, paper stock choice and UV exposure can all affect how a pattern reads in the final product, so a fresh check is worthwhile.
- Vector formats: SVG, EPS, PDF and AI
- Artwork suitable for print, signage, textile and digital applications
- Repeat tile specified for smooth laying across surfaces
- Colour mode set for CMYK, spot colour or black and white as required
Working with our team on a pattern brief
Luyanda Mthembu leads the studio from Observatory, Cape Town, with Ayesha Mafokeng handling vector refinement, Pieter Skosana leading illustration detail, Zanele Kajee managing client communication, Teboho Molefe checking prepress setup and Megan Khoza carrying out final quality control. That team structure helps keep artwork projects organised from the first sketch to the final export. You send the brief through the enquiry form on our contact page, and we respond with the next steps once we have the source material and usage notes.
We work with start-ups, established businesses and product teams across South Africa who need repeat artwork that feels considered and can be used properly by printers and packagers. If your brand uses multiple branches or regional ranges, we can keep the core pattern consistent while adjusting colour or scale for each application. The aim is simple: a repeat that looks right on the shelf, on fabric and on the wall, without fuss.
- Based in Observatory, Cape Town and serving clients nationwide
- Useful for packaging launches, textile runs and branded interiors
- Artwork rights must belong to you or be cleared for redraw use
- Pattern systems can be expanded later for new product lines
